One of the most prominent figures of modernist architecture in Slovakia and the author of many timeless functionalist buildings. The youngest professor of architecture. But also a political prisoner, a man whose life was shaken by the horrors of Stalinism and the Normalization that followed. Architect Eugen Kramár.

ARCHITECTURE

"Architecture is the truest historical document of a nation's capability and cultural maturity. For in architectural works, all expressions of social purpose and artistic form were harmonized in such a way that they became a document of life, a reflection of truth, and a manifestation of artistic beauty."

For Professor Kramár, architecture was not only a profession, but a calling — part of a greater mission to shape a better and more beautiful life within our society. He saw it as deeply connected to national and historical development, a mirror of its level of advancement. He was not merely a representative of modernism and functionalism driven by utilitarianism and technocratism; he understood architecture as essential to the creation of human living space in its full complexity, and rejected any attempt to reduce it by neglecting its ethical, cultural, or ecological dimensions. In this spirit, he gradually moved away from the austere ethos of constructivism, seeking instead, in his words, “to model and shape beauty in continuity with the environment of the past.” Toward the end of his life, he found inspiration especially in Scandinavian architecture, which, he wrote, “suggested new paths toward humanization — toward a sculptural architecture.”

WORKS

ARCHIVE

"The Stalinist era struck me hard. Just as my creative journey was beginning, I was forced out of activity. Through police violence and a show trial, I was condemned to nearly a decade of hermetic darkness. Later, branded an 'elitist', I was sentenced to twenty more years of Normalization-era discrimination. Much was taken from me, and in that anti-cultural darkness, I was left with plenty of time for reflection — and for dreaming."

Selected unbuilt projects, letters from prison, articles published after 1990, and much more — all of it helps complete the portrait of a gifted individual whose life was shaped by adversity, but also offers a deeper understanding of the socio-political realities of the second half of the 20th century.
